Noel Gallagher, Leonard Cohen and the Beatles top the sales
23 April 2012: Initial feedback from Record Store Day shops show
that Record Store Day 2012 on Saturday (April 21) beat all previous
• Vinyl sales reported to be up over 50% compared with Record
Store sales last year;
• Some stores reported sales increases of over 100% compared
to last year;
• Record Store Exclusives this week accounted for 7 of the
Top 10 vinyl albums for the week, despite being on sale for just
• All of the Top 10 physical singles this week are Record
Store Day exclusives.
Record Store Day coordinator - and manager of one of UK's biggest
indie stores Rough Trade East - Spencer Hickman said: "I can't
believe just how busy RSD was again this year, there were queues
round the block with fans both young and old enjoying the unique
atmosphere indie stores provide ensuring that RSD has become the
date music buyers are marking in their diaries. With vinyl sales
again on the rise for the fifth year in a row indie record stores
and RSD are proving to be more relevant than ever for the
discerning music buyer."
Around 230 stores took part in this year's Record Store Day - 50
more than last year. There were around 450 exclusive releases only
available in participating stores, almost double last year's number
and hundreds of events were held around the country.
Alan Jordan of Reflex in Newcastle said, "RSD 2012 was the
busiest, most buzzing day in my 30 years selling recorded music. An
amazing experience I'm proud to be a part of!".
Lawrence Montgomery from Rise said: 'Record Store Day 2012 was a
record day for all four Rise stores but it wasn't just about the
sales - the atmosphere all day from 8am thru till 10pm was out of
this world. Customers, staff and bands all came together to
put on a top notch day of performances. Of course, the
availability of the official Record Store Day Ale certainly helped
The first person queuing was outside Square Records in Dorset at
11am the day before Record Store day to ensure he got the product
he wanted. Other stores reported queues around the block at
opening, some of which did not clear until the stores closed that
Independent Record Stores around the country were reporting the
best days sale ever.
A detailed analysis of the sales will be undertaken once the in
store exclusivity period ends at the end of this week.
RSD dominates physical singles sales
RSD exclusives accounted for every single in the top 10 this week
and the vinyl singles chart was headed by Noel Gallagher.

Beatles box set tops the Vinyl Albums Chart
Record Store Day exclusives dominated the Top 10 Vinyl Albums this
week, despite the fact that they were on sale for only one day. 7
out of the top 10 Vinyl albums were Record Store day products.
Leonard Cohen was the best selling "album" in the traditional sense
but the Beatles Box sold more copies on the day.

Kim Bayley of the Entertainment Retailers Association, who
coordinate the event on the stores behalf commented " Record Store
Day is fast becoming the event for vinyl enthusiasts in the music
calendar. Every year more of the independent shops around the
UK embrace this event and we are delighted that their efforts do
not go unnoticed. This year was the most successful Record
Store Day in the Event's history"
